Active region AR2017 on the Sun has just produced an X1 class solar flare. Here it is in ultraviolet, overwhelming SDO’s instrument:
It’s too early to say if this will produce auroras on Earth, but it’s a good bet, and on the Earth-facing side of the Sun, it might be geoeffective. Here’s hoping. 😉 The equinox is a prime time for auroras, and we’re only a week after it now, so if this does produce, we could get a nice show.
