Stunning new simulation of the Universe

Astronomy Picture of the Day featured this today: the most detailed computer simulation of the Universe ever yet made, the Illustris Simulation.  It required 20 million CPU hours to generate, and it is better than any of its predecessors at predicting the current condition of the Universe, although there are some strange discrepancies — for instance, scientists don’t yet know why it predicts so many more old stars than the actual Universe seems to have.  But it’s hypnotic to watch.
