This weekend’s Doctor Who episode is “Under the Lake”, and it’s the first half of a two-parter that is a ghost story, a base-under-seige story, and apparently also involves the Fisher King in some way. For those not up on their British mythology, the Fisher King is part of the general collection of stories surrounding King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. He helped guard the Holy Grail, but was wounded and so his kingdom suffers. He can no longer hunt, so he just fishes. He’s kept alive and effectively immortal by the Grail, but his wounds cannot heal until someone (in most versions, Percival) asks him a question that will heal him. But Percival does not ask him the healing question. In the Grail legends where Percival gains the Grail, he’s usually accompanied by Galahad and Bors. And what’s interesting there is that the knight who suffers through the Doctor’s anachronistic “axe fight” pun in “The Magician’s Apprentice” is named Bors. Coincidence? Maybe, but it’s a suspicious one….
Anyway, enjoy these clips. It looks like an interesting episode. 😉
