As Musk tweeted, at least they got bigger pieces this time. 😉 The rocket came in beautifully and made a perfect landing — and then one of the landing legs collapsed. Rocket tipped over and exploded on impact with the barge “Just Read the Instructions”. Ice buildup is suspected as the reason one of the locking collets failed to latch, thus allowing the leg to collapse. The vehicle took off in very heavy fog, which would’ve increased icing hazards; a simple fix going forward would be simply to not launch in fog, but they might consider other options as well given SpaceX’s desire to achieve a high flight rate.
The mission was a success, however, since the Jason 3 payload was successfully delivered to the proper orbit. Spacecraft has deployed its solar arrays and is undergoing postlaunch checkouts prior to commissioning.
