Yes, it’s true: Peter Capaldi is moving on

It’s never easy, letting a Doctor go . . . whether they’re in for a year (Eccleston), two seasons (Colin Baker), the typical three, or the marathon seven that Tom Baker had, it’s still not easy to see them go.  But!  At least we get to find out while we still have a whole new season of Capaldi ahead of us!  That makes it a bit easier.  And he’s getting a new companion, who I hope can stick around to bridge into the new Doctor and the new showrunner for Series 11.

So what do we have to look forward to, in Capaldi’s final season as “Doctor Eyebrows”, as my youngest daughter calls him?

  • the new companion, a girl named Bill
  • Bill, who is apparently a Prince fan
  • And we have two companions!  Nardole is staying on after the last Christmas special, which means we have the first male companion since Rory, and the first non-human companion (unless you stretch and count River Song) since Turlough in the early 80s.
  • the Movellans appear to be back! for the first time since “Destiny of the Daleks”, featuring Tom Baker and Lalla Ward in 1979 — if you’re not a classic Who fan, they’re beautiful androids who are completely opposed to the Daleks — and everybody else.
  • there have been rumors (sparked by a teasing remark by Peter Capaldi) that Clara is back in some form — however, Jenna Coleman says she did not record anything as Clara, and ruled out a cameo as well, so it sounds like something more oblique
  • Missy is back, however!  The latest deliciously evil incarnation of the Doctor’s Time Lord nemesis will return.
  • The Ice Warriors are also back, again written by Mark Gatiss, and apparently featuring a new type of Ice Warrior — intriguing!
  • Alas, Peter Jackson directing still appears to be a pipe dream, unless they’ve managed to really shock us all with some amazing secret shooting

So, there are some nice juicy hints in there!  What more may be waiting for us?

  1. So shocked to see the Movellans making a comeback, though with mixed feelings … partially because I had started writing an extended fanfic about the Dalek-Movellan War which will imminently be rendered obsolete, though enough of my sour grapes.

I am very surprised from what we have seen that their appearance does not seem to have been updated, as they surely have one of the most dated looks in the series. The word “disco” comes up all too often in discussions of “Destiny …” I would not have thought it would be too hard to allude to the basic look yet give it a more modern and sleek spin, as with the Cybermen, Silurians, etc. Even going back to the original, simpler costume design would be a start (https://www.tombakerofficial.com/wp-content/uploads/doctor_who_the_destiny_of_the_daleks_agella.jpg).

Still, will be interesting to see what they do with them, but I hope at any rate it will be more nuanced than the moral of “Destiny …” which seemed to amount to “artificial intelligence = evil, human emotions = good” – acceptable if facile in 1979, possibly, but looks a lot worse in the wake of Star Trek TNG, Mass Effect, et al. And if they make the Daleks out to be robots again, I shall die of cringing …

    • I loved the Movellans, and am eager to see them back! Assuming the rumors are true, that is. 😉 Sorry to hear it’s ruining your fanfic. That happened to me a few years back as well. Oh well — I try to think of the positive. If new episodes are ruining our fanfiction, that means there *are* new episodes! 😉 That wasn’t the case for far too long. And I agree — I hope it doesn’t hit us over the head with “AI bad, human emotion good” and leave it at that.

      • So did I, which is odd because I feel what works best in “Destiny …” is almost what the writer / editor did not intend. I love the moment, for example, when Agella refuses to kill Romana because she sees no logical benefit in it, though it completely rubbishes the story claim that logic without emotion = evil, and that this is the key to Dalek psychology. A Dalek would have fried Romana just for the s**ts and giggles …

And I am sorry to hear about your fanfic as well. 😦 I just hope it was steamrolled over by a good piece of canon.
